“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 NLT
It’s hard to believe that we are already at the end of another year. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the year goes by! It’s a weird dichotomy of feeling like it has taken forever while also feeling like it has only taken a moment.
It’s in this moment that I am thankful for the cooler weather, time with family, getting back into rhythms of rest, and some amazing food that we will enjoy during the holidays!
It’s also in this moment that I think it’s good to pause and reflect during what could be a season of thankfulness for you and me.
Maybe you’ve felt this way before, but just because our community, or even a close friend, is celebrating a season of thankfulness, it doesn’t automatically mean that we will be doing the same. It doesn’t matter how much promotion or branding goes into it—if the thankfulness isn’t there, it’s simply just not there.
When I read the opening verse of Psalm 107, I am given clear instructions:
“Give thanks to the Lord!” Why? “For He is good!
I’m not asked to give thanks only when I feel like it. I’m not asked to give thanks only when things are going my way. I’m asked to simply give thanks in all situations.
Why?
Because He is good.
Circumstances in my life might not be good… even so, He is still good.
The call to thankfulness isn't conditional on things going my way. It's a reminder to posture my heart toward His and remember that He is good, no matter what I am facing.
Because He is good, and because I know His love endures forever, I can trust that it will all work together for good.
My life is in good hands when I entrust it to the One who created it.
As we enter the fall and winter months, let’s take some intentional moments to reflect on His goodness and faithfulness in our lives.
Even if things aren’t good right now… He is. And because He is… it will all be good.
Would you take a moment as we come to the close of this devotional to think of three things for which you can simply say, “Thank you, Jesus!”? And if not three, just one? Posture your heart today to give thanks to the Lord! He is good!
Challenge:
Take some time this week to write a list of 10 things that you are thankful for. Be specific. Be intentional. Then begin to tell Jesus, “Thank You!” for those things in your life. Don’t rush through the moments—simply sit in His presence with thankfulness.
Prayer:
Jesus, I want to thank You today for Your love that truly endures forever. I thank You for Your kindness toward us as Your people. You have truly been so good to us! It’s easy for life to distract us with circumstances, situations, problems, and challenges. However, Your goodness shines through and becomes the focus of our hearts.
