Thursday Morning Sunrise

With seasons changing, we’ve had several beautiful, foggy sunrises, and I really enjoy this on days I have to leave the house early in the morning. As I drove my kids to school last week, on an ordinary Thursday, the most stunning beams of light peeked through dense fog floating just inches above a wide-open field. What truly stunned me was the fact that this field was, on any regular day, a boring, unkept mess that would never catch my eye or be something I’d ever call beautiful. Yet in a moment, the morning sun completely transformed the atmosphere, making something that was honestly a pretty ugly block of land look absolutely majestic. So majestic that I was bummed I didn’t have time to stop and take a picture of it.

The sun often shows up in nature as a beautiful reflection of our Savior, the Son of God. We can invite him into any mess, no matter how neglected or ordinary, and immediately, His presence brings an unmatched beauty that nothing else in this world can compare to.

That sunrise didn’t make the weeds go away. It just gave that moment a new and beautiful perspective.

In the same way, God wants to show up in our ordinary lives. They are often messy and disorganized, far from perfect, and may even contain areas we've neglected for too long—things that have grown beyond our capacity to control or handle alone.

Sometimes we feel like we have to clean up the mess before we can invite God in, only to find that it’s impossible to achieve this without Him. Other times, we invite him into the mess, and find ourselves frustrated that the “weeds” are still there. We want him to dissolve all our problems, and he doesn’t always take every pain point of our lives away. This can be frustrating, but friend, may I remind you—instant beauty is found when we let His presence in.

He doesn’t always take our pain away, but he meets us in the middle of it. And when He meets us in our weakness, His glory and strength are on display. What was once ugly becomes something that reflects the radiance of His character. The warmth of his presence brings joy and peace. Suddenly, the beauty of His majesty outweighs our problems, and we can move forward with confidence that he really can help us through anything.

Are you trying to get rid of the weeds before letting Jesus in? May you know that the God of all creation loves you and wants to be a part of your ordinary life—even the ugly things you aren’t proud of.

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” Revelation 3:20 NLT
