Devotionals

In 2015, I was given the opportunity to write devotionals for LandMAX Properties and Timber Company, where I worked part-time. The "Words of Encouragement" devotional series was originally inspired by LandMAX’s owner, Chad Smith, whose heart has always been to be a light to others through his daily work. Though my husband, Matt, and I took on a new ministry role out of town shortly after this began, I’ve continued writing for LandMAX ever since (and sometimes Matt jumps in to write as well)!

We’re incredibly grateful for the many years we’ve been part of this wonderful vision for the LandMAX community, and now we’re excited to extend these devotionals to you, too!

Greener Grass

As I pulled into my driveway yesterday, I noticed how unusually green my yard was for this time of year. Okay, maybe that’s not so unusual for Mississippi. Still, it stands out vibrantly compared to the homes on the left and right of us this winter. Why? Well, unfortunately, I didn’t apply the big bag of fall pre-emergent weed control I purchased in time, and the weeds are thriving. I’m still learning how to care for our new yard and have made a few mistakes along the way. So, I guess the grass is always greener on the other side… unless it’s winter and your yard is full of weeds!

Unbothered

“Do not worry.” A command from Jesus that is often difficult for me to personally apply. When there is something going on in my life and I don’t see the end picture, panic can quickly creep in and create a strong sense of urgency to try to figure out how to resolve it all on my own. It creates striving. I find myself wasting precious time trying to figure out all the details or taking things on that were never mine to carry.

Mind Reader

David prayed a deeply significant prayer when he asked God to help him with all sin in his life—both deliberate sins and the “hidden faults” buried deep in his heart that he might not even be aware of. This was a brave prayer to pray, and what an example he set for us to follow. We want to be proud of who we are and feel like we’re getting things right, so it can be tempting to lie to ourselves about our motives in order to feel better. Asking God to help us face these things requires real honesty and a genuine commitment to change.

What Are You Running From?

The story of Jonah is a powerful one. What you may remember most is his encounter with the great fish and surviving three days in its belly. While that is true, it is only a small part of a much greater story.

Will You Believe?

In John 6, we read the incredible miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000 and then slipping away shortly afterward to be by Himself. After making His way to Capernaum miraculously through the night by walking on water, that same crowd realized He was gone and pursued Him by boat. When they arrived, Jesus quickly called them out on their motives for following Him.
