Devotionals
In 2015, I was given the opportunity to write devotionals for LandMAX Properties and Timber Company, where I worked part-time. The "Words of Encouragement" devotional series was originally inspired by LandMAX’s owner, Chad Smith, whose heart has always been to be a light to others through his daily work. Though my husband, Matt, and I took on a new ministry role out of town shortly after this began, I’ve continued writing for LandMAX ever since (and sometimes Matt jumps in to write as well)!
We’re incredibly grateful for the many years we’ve been part of this wonderful vision for the LandMAX community, and now we’re excited to extend these devotionals to you, too!
A Redemption Story
The story of Job is relatable to us all. After tremendous loss, Job asks God, “why?” We are given a unique perspective into Job’s circumstances, hearing the behind-the-scenes as God allows his testing to happen. The reader also gets to know how the story ends—with God lovingly restoring to Job all that he had lost. As Job laments and grieves all that he had lost, he makes a few profound statements that are oddly prophetic.
Over-Prepared
Did you know that a Penn State University study shows that roughly 85 to 91 percent of our worst-case worries never come true? Still, I recently heard some great advice on how to take those worst-case fears and use them to your advantage by interrupting the thought and imagining yourself responding well if that situation happened instead. I took this advice and ran with it recently. While it was helpful at first, it didn’t take long for me to miss the whole point and go overboard with this practice, wanting to be overly prepared for any possible difficult interaction that could ever come my way. That definitely defeated the purpose and intention of said advice.
Let’s Be Friends
I love the beautiful invitation that Jesus gives in Revelation 3:20 to hear His knock, open the door, and share a meal with Him as a friend. We just opened our home to share a meal with friends for the first time since moving to South Carolina, and it was so much fun! We plan on doing this much more as we build community here, and we’ve always loved grabbing lunch or dinner—or even coffee—with our friends, too. One of the fastest ways to get to know people is to sit down and share a meal with them. There’s just something special that happens around a table.
The Source
Turning to the logical solution isn’t the wrong thing to do. But leaning on that alone omits the very Source—the source of all wisdom in modern medicine and things we haven’t even discovered yet. The source of every financial solution, because not only does He own everything, but He made it all, too. The source of all hope, joy, peace, and every good thing. What would Asa’s story have looked like if he had turned to God first?
Correction or Criticism?
We live in a world where, thanks to so much of our lives being lived online, we hear an opposing opinion for almost everything we see. Content created with good intentions gets picked apart online daily. People often assume things about the person who created it—their motives, their financial status, etc.—picking the person apart piece by piece. Let’s take it a step further—the comments themselves get picked apart, too! Have an opinion? Rest assured, the opposite will be argued if you share that opinion online.
